Mel Searle | Jazz Vocalist

Mel Searle is one of Melbourne’s most engaging and refined jazz vocalists. With her smooth, honeyed vocals and elegant phrasing, she evokes the charm and sophistication of the golden jazz era—bringing warmth, sparkle, and class to every performance.

 

Known for her luminous tone, effortless control, and natural gift for improvisation, Mel’s performances are heartfelt and stylish, whether she’s interpreting a jazz classic or reimagining a timeless standard. Her phrasing is both refined and instinctive, and her vocal tone—often described as liquid honey—has captivated audiences across Melbourne’s vibrant jazz scene.

 

Mel is a regular at many of the city’s top venues, including Paris Cat Jazz Club and Bird’s Basement, and has been performing her critically praised Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald show since 2016. She also appears frequently with the JMQ Jazz Ensemble and collaborates with some of Australia’s most esteemed jazz musicians.

 

Alongside her love of jazz, Mel has a deep passion for a cappella music and has spent the past decade performing with some of Australia’s finest small a cappella ensembles. This experience has further shaped her artistry and deepened her appreciation for vocal harmony, nuance, and connection.

 

With more than two decades of professional experience and a background in music education, Mel is a polished and versatile performer—equally at home on the jazz club stage, at a corporate event, or creating the perfect atmosphere for a private celebration. Her passion for music began early, nurtured through classical piano studies and singing in her local church. These formative years shaped her deep emotional connection to music and led her to study Music Education at the University of Melbourne. It was during her teaching career that she discovered the voice as her true creative instrument.

 

In addition to her work as a performer, Mel is an accomplished Musical and Creative Director. She has led numerous ensembles, including community choirs, church bands, and event-based vocal groups.

 

Mel is also a sought-after vocal coach and continues to mentor and inspire emerging singers through her teaching practice.
